Spring Pollen in the Triangle: What Every Homeowner Needs to Check Right Now

✍️ Mark Faust — MCKS Handyman Services, LLC 📅 April 2, 2026 ⏱️ 5 min read

If you live in Holly Springs, Apex, or anywhere in Wake County, you already know the drill. Sometime in late March, the world turns yellow. Your car. Your deck. Your gutters. That green-tinted film on every window screen. North Carolina’s pollen season is no joke — and for your home, it’s more than just an inconvenience. Pollen buildup left unchecked can cause real damage over time.

Here’s what Mark typically sees coming up after a hard pollen season, and what you should be doing now before summer heat sets in.

1. Rinse Your Deck — Then Take a Close Look at What’s Underneath

Start by rinsing or sweeping the pollen off your deck. A garden hose works for light buildup — for heavier accumulation, a pressure washer rental or a local pressure washing service will do the job faster and more thoroughly.

Once it’s clean, that’s where the real inspection begins. Get down close and look at the boards. Are any soft underfoot? Splintering at the edges? Showing dark staining or discoloration between boards?

Catching early rot now — before summer cookout season — is always cheaper than replacing a whole section later. If you’re seeing soft spots or structural concerns, that’s a job worth having Mark assess before it spreads.

2. Inspect Your Window Screens

Pollen clogs screen mesh quickly. Pull your screens, rinse them with a garden hose, and let them dry before reinstalling. While they’re out, inspect the frames. Warped or bent screens let pollen — and bugs — back in all summer.

3. Check Your Exterior Trim and Painted Surfaces

Pollen is mildly acidic. Over multiple seasons, it contributes to paint degradation, especially on north-facing and shaded surfaces that don’t dry out as quickly. Look for peeling, chalking, or bubbling on your trim boards, fascia, and soffits. Spring is the ideal time to address exterior paint before the humidity spikes.

4. Look at Your Gutters

Pine pollen is light enough to drift, but it accumulates fast in gutters — especially when it mixes with spring rain and creates a paste that blocks drainage. Walk the perimeter and look for overflow staining on your siding or fascia. A clogged gutter during a heavy spring rain can send water toward your foundation or behind your siding, which becomes a much bigger problem than a yellow car.

Note: Gutter cleaning is a straightforward DIY task if you’re comfortable on a ladder, or a quick hire for a local gutter service if you’d rather not deal with it.

5. Hardscape and Patio Surfaces

Pollen works into paver joints and flagstone the same way it works into wood grain. A garden hose rinse handles light buildup — for a deeper clean, a pressure washer rental or local pressure washing service is worth it. After rinsing, take a look at your joint sand or mortar. If you’re seeing shifting, cracking, or areas where pavers have settled unevenly, spring — before the ground bakes hard — is the right time to fix it. That’s where Mark can help.

Don’t Let It Stack Up

The Triangle’s pollen season is intense but short. The homeowners who come out ahead are the ones who do a quick walk-around in April and catch small problems before they become summer emergencies.

If your post-pollen inspection turns up anything that needs attention — deck boards, exterior trim, hardscape repairs, or anything else on the list — Mark is available to take a look and give you a straight answer on what actually needs to happen.
